Favorite thing about online school is actually the community. We have the chat functions, and then we got the K12 Zone, which is an absolutely lovely place where you get to meet people. It’s great. If you want to become full-time, outside-of-school friends with someone, you can.

We’re going to help you out with that.’ And that means the world. That just means the world of difference, right?

It ended up being a really amazing transition for him from homeschooling to a community he immediately engaged in. When we first got him enrolled, we looked at all of the different clubs and activities, and he saw the K12 National Cook-Off. He’d never done anything like that before. He immersed himself and ended up placing [in the] top five of more than 400 students and then placed third [in the finals]!

How CAVA Makes a Difference
This is my first year with the robotics team. I have really enjoyed learning how to use the VRT (Virtual Robotics Toolkit). My teammates have been extremely helpful in walking me through it, and now I feel very confident using it on my own. I love the team dynamic. We’re laughing as we’re coding, but we also get things done efficiently and productively. It brings us closer together.
For a lot of my students who haven’t had very positive in-person schooling experiences, [online school] has been a very eye-opening experience for them that they can like learning and that they can feel safe, whatever that means to them … and enjoy school more because they’re not worried about some of the things they were worried about in person.
We have access to a lot of sources. So, when we’re in our classes, we can quickly ask the teacher, and once they answer, we can also check with our other students and see if somebody else [has] the same issue or a different issue. We all get to collaborate together and improve as a group.
I spend a lot of time on the K12 Zone. They add a theme to it every couple of months or so. There’s winter and spring and events and holidays, and everyone gets to customize their own character, so it’s your own personality. And you have microphones. You can walk up to people and spark a conversation, and it’s really easy to make friends on there.
It’s an amazing feeling to know how far he’s come and who he has become because of the school that has helped him. Especially right now, the world is so crazy, and he is such a great little boy. He’s so self-confident, and I think a lot of it has to do with his schooling. It's been so amazing for him. He feels like he succeeds every single day. Once we close that computer, he’s just like, ‘We did it!’ High-five.
When I tell people, the first thing that comes to mind is, oh, no, they must be introverted. They have no friends. They don’t have any social skills. That’s not true at all. [K12] gives you a lot of opportunities to visit with your peers, students in their geographical area, as well as their grade level. They also get plenty of opportunities to communicate virtually with their peers … near and far. That’s great. Another myth is [that] they’re not learning as much. To be honest, I think my kids are probably more advanced.
