Finding Their Voice: How Rock and Roll Academy Brings Music and Connection to CAVA Students 

Students at California Virtual Academies (CAVA) have opportunities to explore interests beyond their daily coursework. Rock and Roll Academy is one of those experiences, offering students a place to engage with music, connect with peers, and build confidence. 

Now in its sixth year at CAVA, the program continues to grow, giving students across grade levels access to music in a way that feels both approachable and meaningful. 

A Unique Opportunity for Students 

Rock and Roll Academy meets weekly and gives students the chance to learn an instrument, collaborate with peers, and express themselves creatively. Students can choose from instruments such as guitar, keyboard, drums, bass, or ukulele, with instruments provided at no cost to families. 

The program is built on a simple foundation that helps guide students as they learn: 

• Start where you are 

• Give yourself time and space to learn 

• Extend the same courtesy to others 

This approach creates an environment where students feel comfortable participating, regardless of experience level. 

“Students were attending classes, but they weren’t always connecting with each other,” says Madonna Johnson, CTE Program Coordinator at CAVA. “Through Rock and Roll Academy, they’ve found that connection.” 

Johnson has played a key role in supporting the program and ensuring students continue to have access to this opportunity. 

Building Confidence Through Music 

For many students, Rock and Roll Academy becomes a space where they feel comfortable expressing themselves and trying something new. 

Kissandra, an 11th-grade student at CAVA, has been part of the program for several years and plays piano during weekly sessions. 

“It’s a very supportive environment,” she says. “No matter your experience level, everyone encourages each other.” 

That encouragement has made a lasting impact on her confidence as a performer. 

“When I first joined, I was much more insecure about my playing and nervous to perform in front of others,” Kissandra says. “But over time, that support really helped me go outside of my comfort zone. Now I feel much more confident and don’t worry as much about making mistakes.” 

That support helps students build confidence over time, both in their playing and in sharing their work with others. 

Collaboration and Creativity 

Students connect in a virtual setting where they share music, form groups, and work on projects together. Each session includes time to check in, share progress, and learn from one another. 

“One of my favorite parts is getting to see how everyone interprets music differently,” Kissandra says. “You learn from each other and how people express emotion through music.” 

Students also collaborate using tools like BandLab, which allows them to create and refine music together. At the end of each semester, they participate in a virtual showcase where they perform for family, friends, and members of the school community. 

A Space to Grow 

Rock and Roll Academy creates an environment where students can develop both skills and confidence over time. Some join with no prior experience, while others continue to build on skills they already have. 

“It gives students something to look forward to each week,” one student shared. “You can play, learn, and not feel judged. That’s what a musician needs.” 

Mark Galbo, founder and CEO of Rock and Roll Academy, has spent more than four decades in education and focuses on creating spaces where students can share their authentic voices. 

“Music is a language you already speak,” he says. 

Part of the CAVA Experience 

Rock and Roll Academy adds another layer to the CAVA experience by giving students a way to connect, explore their interests, and grow beyond their regular coursework. 

“I’ve really enjoyed my time in the program,” Kissandra says. “I’ve had great experiences and met a lot of great people.” 

Programs like this give students the opportunity to build confidence, develop new skills, and form connections that carry beyond the classroom.
