Our middle school teachers enjoy teaching and are excited to make this a great year for your student!
Deanna Vallerga | Director of Middle School
Ms. Vallerga started her career in education in 1992. She received her bachelor's degree in liberal studies, a multiple subject teaching credential from California State University, Long Beach, and holds a clear administrative credential. Before coming to CAVA, Ms. Vallerga worked in K–8 public schools in Fishers, Indiana, and Cupertino, California, mainly with 5th through 8th grade students. She joined the CAVA staff in 2005 as a K–8 teacher. Since then, she has served as the lead of language arts, and regional program coordinator for the northern CAVA schools for six years. Currently, she is the Director of Middle School for all nine California Virtual Academies. Ms. Vallerga is committed to making the CAVA middle school program a great schooling option for all middle school students.
Sharon Flemmer | Middle School Principal
Ms. Flemmer earned her bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of California, Davis, with a minor in education. She received her multiple subject teaching credential from the University of the Pacific and an advanced K–12 online teaching certificate from Boise State. Ms. Flemmer began her K–8 teaching career in Lodi, California in 1994. In 2009, she joined CAVA at San Joaquin staff. Her CAVA experience has included working with students in kindergarten through 8th grade and as a teacher trainer, in addition to a regional lead teacher. Ms. Flemmer is dedicated to helping middle school students find personal success in their education career.
Crystal Goldberg | Middle School Principal
Educational Leadership from the University of the Pacific. In 2008, she began her career in education with Aspire Public Schools. There she spent 5 years teaching 2nd and 3rd grade. Mrs. Goldberg began working for the California Virtual Academies in 2013. She has had experience in Middle School, 2nd – 5th grade, Community Day Teacher, and worked as a Middle School Lead in Campus 1 from 2018-2022.
Crystal lives in Valley Springs (a small town in the Northern California foothills) with her husband and her two children. Outside of education, she enjoys the theatre and musicals (Hamilton and Phantom of the Opera are her favorites), dancing, playing the piano, and reading. She and her family love to be outdoors, gardening and tending to their animals.
April Barnes | Middle School Principal
Mrs. Barnes earned my Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Conservation Biology from the University of California, Davis, Master of Arts in Biology Education and my Teaching Credential from Northern Arizona University, and her Preliminary Administrative Credential through Merced County of Education. In 2004 she began her teaching career at Los Banos Unified School district teaching 7th grade Life Science and teaching several years as adjunct faculty at Fresno City College. Mrs. Barnes has been with CAVA since 2011. She has served CAVA as a HS teacher, and most recently a High School Lead.
Mrs. Barnes live in Clovis, Central California, with her husband. We have two fun-loving adopted boys; and an energetic dog Pepper. She am very passionate about creating with my hands; she enjoys stenciling, painting, embroidery, creating beaded jewelry and home decor. Before her sons were born, she used to teach beading classes at a local store! She also loves to cook “fun foods” and try new recipes. With that said, she also enjoy exercising with her sons. They often scooter as she jogs around the neighborhood.
Mindy Dahl | Middle School Curriculum Specialist
Ms. Dahl received her master's degree in education, master's degree in business administration, multiple subject teaching credential, and bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of La Verne. Before joining CAVA in 2017 as a middle school teacher, she taught across the grade levels in schools throughout Southern California. She has also served on curriculum and technology committees, been a mentor teacher, a lead teacher, and a master teacher for Cal State Teach. Ms. Dahl is dedicated to helping students and teachers find new and exciting ways to interact with curriculum to achieve their learning goals.
Amber Roumiguiere | Middle School Curriculum Specialist
Ms. Roumiguiere received her bachelor's degree from the University of California, Los Angeles and her multiple subject teaching credential from California State University, Sacramento. Prior to joining CAVA, she taught in Elk Grove and Sacramento area schools for several years as a paraprofessional for special education, classroom teacher, trainer of trainers, and master teacher. Ms. Roumiguiere joined CAVA in 2011 and served as a classroom teacher and engagement and support teacher before joining the curriculum team in 2018. She is passionate about curriculum and optimizing educational opportunities for students.
