At California Virtual Academies (CAVA), high school students have more than just access to a strong academic foundation. They also have the chance to develop leadership skills, build community, and shape the student experience through the Associated Student Body (ASB) program.

ASB plays an essential role in bringing students together across CAVA’s virtual campuses. Whether organizing events like prom and Bear Breaks or participating in a dedicated ASB leadership course, these student leaders are proving that school spirit can thrive in a virtual setting.

What Does ASB Do?

ASB is a student-led organization that empowers high schoolers to make a positive impact on their school community. At CAVA, the program includes:

  • Student officers elected by their peers
  • A leadership course that teaches life skills
  • Monthly Bear Break events are open to all students
  • Planning and promotion of in-person and virtual school events, including prom, movie nights, and fundraisers

Currently, about 25 to 30 students actively participate in ASB leadership and planning meetings, with hundreds more engaging in schoolwide activities throughout the year.

Bear Breaks…Building Community in a Virtual Setting

ASB is building student connections through Bear Breaks. These are monthly, 30-minute virtual social events hosted by student officers. They feature breakout rooms with music, games, and chat spaces, giving students a chance to connect outside of class.

ASB also helps plan special experiences like Senior Sunset, a virtual movie night with trivia, and fundraising events such as See’s Candy sales and spirit wear promotions. These events create a sense of belonging for CAVA students across California, no matter where they live.

Prom: In-Person and Online

One of ASB’s biggest projects each year is prom. CAVA hosts two in-person proms, one in Northern California and one in Southern California, with a virtual prom option available for students who cannot attend in person.

Virtual attendees engage with games, music, and real-time video from the dance floor and have a live chat with their fellow students. Many students dress up and join the celebration from home and say they feel a part of the fun and excitement.

Who Can Join?

Any student in grades 10 through 12 who meet eligibility requirements, including a minimum GPA of 2.5 and compliance with school policies, are encouraged to join. Officers are elected through a schoolwide voting process and must submit campaign speeches in advance.

ASB officers are encouraged to enroll in the ASB Leadership Course, a five-credit elective designed around the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens based on the tenets of effective leadership by renowned author Stephen Covey. This course helps students recognize their personal growth and encourages development of lifelong leadership skills.

Why Join ASB?

Students who participate in ASB gain experience in:

  • Leadership and collaboration
  • Public speaking and event planning
  • Time management and communication
  • Creating inclusive and engaging experiences for peers

ASB gives students a chance to have their voices heard, build school spirit, and leave a legacy at CAVA. ASB is a great place to start for students interested in leadership, service, or simply making a difference.
