Graduating with Focus and Purpose: Matt’s Success Story at CAVA
For Matt, a recent graduate of California Virtual Academies (CAVA), finding the right learning environment changed everything. As a student with autism, he needed structure, consistency, and clear expectations. He found all that and more at CAVA.
Matt enrolled as a freshman after his family made the decision to stay home longer during the COVID-19 pandemic to protect his older brother, who is medically fragile. Extended quarantine led them to seek a virtual learning option that could provide both safety and stability. Independent study and in-person school programs did not meet his needs, and CAVA stood out as a better fit. The shift gave him what he was missing: a well-organized schedule, a clear roadmap for each course, and the ability to learn in a way that worked for him.
Learning with Support and Structure
Matt is a vestibular and visual learner. He processes information best when he is able to incorporate physical movement and revisit lessons. At CAVA, he could watch recordings of his live Class Connect sessions, review lessons multiple times, and retake quizzes to reinforce the material.
“If I got a grade I did not like on a quiz, I could restudy and take it again,” Matt said. “The second time I understood it better. Sometimes I took it three times until I got it right.”
He also received consistent support through an Individualized Education Program. The special education team reached out before the school year began to ensure his accommodations were already in place. They made thoughtful changes over time and added occupational and speech therapy to support his growth.
Through that support, Matt learned how to organize his thoughts, write more clearly, and even developed a signature for his name for the first time. “CAVA was a perfect fit for me,” he said. “I needed structure and support, and I had both. I learned how to manage my time, organize my thoughts, and build real skills.”
Gaining Real-World Skills through Career Prep
CAVA’s career prep program gave Matt a hands-on introduction to video game design, coding, and 3D modeling. These skills translated into a unique opportunity. After graduation, he began an internship as a draftsman at his father’s landscape architecture company.
He earned cords from the National Technical Honor Society in recognition of his dedication to career readiness. Although he has not decided on a college path yet, Matt is exploring options while continuing to build on the skills he gained at CAVA.
Pursuing Passion and Discipline through Karate
Outside of school, Matt is a competitive para-athlete in karate. He began training during the pandemic and recently earned a silver medal at an international tournament. He is preparing to compete in Fort Worth, Texas this summer, where he will try out for the USA Para Karate Team.
“Karate helps me stay on track,” he said. “It gives me something to focus on.”
Giving Back through Community Service
Matt has also given his time to others. He has volunteered with United Cerebral Palsy of the Inland Empire, supporting individuals with developmental and physical disabilities. He helped prepare gift bags for community events, assisted with charity walks and adaptive bike rides, and worked alongside other high school volunteers.
“I liked being able to help people like my brother,” Matt shared. “It felt good to be part of something that made a difference.”
Celebrating Milestones and Looking Ahead
At graduation, Matt met a classmate he had only seen through a computer screen. “We had been in the same homeroom for three years but lived in different cities,” he said. “We finally got to meet in person, and it was great to talk about what we both liked about school.”
Matt’s advice to future students is simple and practical. “Keep ahead of things,” he said. “Do not wait for everything to be due. Do the work as it comes, or even earlier.”
