Inspiring Stories: How CAVA Students and Families Motivate Our Principals Every Day
Every day at California Virtual Academies brings a new reminder of why education matters. For CAVA principals, the most meaningful moments come from watching students overcome challenges, families work together, and teachers celebrate growth. These stories inspire them to continue leading with care and purpose.
Celebrating Resilience
High school principal Mr. Marc Shaw recalls a story that continues to motivate him. “One family in particular comes to mind,” he says. “The student was receiving SPED services and struggled with attendance and motivation. Through patience, collaboration, and encouragement, the student began to attend classes more consistently and take pride in their progress.”
Mr. Shaw credits the partnership between teachers and the student’s parent for this success. “The student’s mother never gave up,” he says. “She showed perseverance, love, and belief in her child’s potential. Together with our staff, she helped her child make real progress.”
Stories like this remind Mr. Shaw that success is built through teamwork. “When families and educators work together, students see that they are not alone,” he says. “That sense of support can change everything.”
Recognizing Growth and Compassion
Seventh-grade principal Ms. Cherisse Kaelin often reflects on the courage and dedication she sees in her students. “One story that stands out is about a fifth-grade student who was caring for younger siblings while attending class,” she says. “He was struggling to manage both school and family responsibilities, but he continued to show up every day and put in his best effort.”
Ms. Kaelin shares that with encouragement and structure, this student succeeded. “Our team worked with him and his learning coach to build a plan that supported his needs,” she says. “Watching him find confidence and balance reminded me of the strength our students have and the difference we can make when we meet them with understanding.”
Honoring Family Commitment
TK and kindergarten principal Ms. Connie Wissner finds inspiration in the families who have been part of CAVA for many years. “I think of the Smiley family,” she says. “They were with us for quite some time, and watching their journey through different grade levels was such a joy.”
Ms. Wissner loves seeing how parents and learning coaches grow right alongside their students. “The dedication of families like theirs reminds me why we do what we do,” she says. “Their support helps students build confidence and find joy in learning.”
Ms. Wissner also makes a point to recognize achievements in personal ways. “I send postcards to families to celebrate success,” she says. “It is important to let families know that we see their effort and that it matters.”
Moments that Matter
Third-grade principal Ms. Lisa Magallanes shares that her favorite stories often come from simple classroom moments that show how far her students have come. “One student who was usually shy volunteered to lead the Pledge of Allegiance during a class meeting,” she says. “The smile on her face afterward was unforgettable. You could see how proud she felt.”
Ms. Magallanes says these moments are reminders of the growth that happens every day at CAVA. “Seeing students gain confidence and take initiative fills my heart with joy,” she says. “It shows that our teachers’ encouragement and care make a real impact.”
Inspired by Students and Families
Each success story, from the smallest milestone to the greatest achievement, reflects what drives CAVA principals every day. Whether a student overcomes personal challenges, a family shows unwavering support, or a child finds their voice for the first time, these moments are what keep them inspired.
Mr. Shaw, Ms. Kaelin, Ms. Wissner, and Ms. Magallanes each remind us that behind every achievement is a community of caring educators and families working together to help students succeed. Their stories define CAVA values: compassion, partnership, and a shared belief that every student can grow and shine.
