Kindergarten Student Isaiah Shines in K12 Reel Me Competition

Stories & Spotlights
CAVA student Isaiah

Five-year-old Isaiah is already showing the world his creativity, confidence, and love of learning.  Isaiah, a kindergarten student at California Virtual Academies, recently took first place in the K–2nd grade group of the national K12 Reel Me competition. The annual event invites students from across the country to create short videos that express who they are and what makes them unique. Submissions range from dance and music to sports, storytelling, and art. Isaiah’s entry highlighted his love of basketball, and it stood out among entries from students in dozens of states.

Isaiah recorded a short video with the help of his mom, featuring his favorite sport. In just one take, he sunk the winning basket that became the highlight of his entry. “When we got the email that he won first place, we were shocked,” his mom said. “He was so excited, and it was really special for him to see his video celebrated.”

A Strong Start in Kindergarten

Isaiah’s story is not only about winning a national competition. It is also about the strong foundation he is building in kindergarten at CAVA. His mom enrolled him because she wanted to be closely involved in his learning and appreciated the hands-on approach.

“Before he even started kindergarten, he joined the summer Jump Start Academy,” she explained. “It gave us a good idea of what the school year would look like. By the time classes started, he was ready. He already knew his numbers and letters. Every week he gets assignments like writing, drawing, and coloring. It is very interactive, and I feel CAVA is really advanced.”

Isaiah agrees. When asked what he enjoys most about school, he said, “I like practicing numbers. Math is my favorite.”

Learning, Play, and Community

Isaiah’s family values the balance CAVA provides between academics, interactive projects, and real-world experiences. While he practices math and reading online, he also has hands-on assignments that allow him to explore learning away from the computer.

“CAVA makes sure there are in-person events where he can meet other students and teachers,” his mom shared. “We have gone to the Christmas celebration and the end-of-school beach day. He always has a great time, and I love that he gets to learn at home and still be part of a community.”

In addition to school, Isaiah plays basketball with his Little All Stars team, giving him even more opportunities to grow, play, and make friends.

A Bright Future Ahead

Kindergarten has already opened doors to new skills and experiences for Isaiah. He is building confidence in math, developing creativity through school projects, and now celebrating a national award for his video in the Reel Me competition. His mom hopes other families will consider this path. “If you want to be hands-on and see your child’s day-to-day progress, I say go for it. There are so many benefits, and I believe CAVA gives kids a stronger start.”

Congratulations to Isaiah on his first place Reel Me win! We cannot wait to see what he accomplishes next as he continues to grow, learn, and inspire others in the CAVA community.
