Student Spotlight: Curren Finds His Voice and Passion at CAVA

Stories & Spotlights

When Curren joined California Virtual Academies (CAVA) in the ninth grade, he was not expecting to discover a passion for public speaking, a drive to publish a book, and a community of friends with whom he would stay connected, even after graduation. But four years later, the CAVA San Diego student delivered a heartfelt commencement address, earned his position as class rank 2 with a 4.35 GPA, and is preparing to publish his debut children’s book, an illustrated superhero story he first imagined in elementary school.

Curren’s journey with CAVA began after experiencing a taste of online learning during COVID. He realized that a virtual high school experience could offer not only the balance he needed to thrive but the support and structure to fuel his creative ambitions.

“I loved how flexible the scheduling was. I loved how interactive the classes were, how helpful the teachers were, and how I could still connect with other students,” Curren said.

Curren enrolled in the CAVA College and Career Prep program in Arts and Media. Through this program, he explored advanced software tools including Blender, Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe After Effects. With these skills, he refined his animation techniques and began developing original stories and characters, most notably Captain Chillwawa, the hero of his upcoming book.

“My dad taught me how to use Photoshop and Illustrator when I was about three years old,” Curren said. “I have always been a creative person, and now I am writing and illustrating my own book. Captain Chillwawa is a superhero chihuahua with a very relaxed personality. I hope it appeals to kids and families alike.”

Curren plans to self-publish the book this fall with help from his father, a graphic designer. His goal is to pursue a career in animation and eventually produce his own films, shows, and more books.

Beyond his creative achievements, Curren’s time at CAVA was filled with academic success and community involvement. He took honors classes all four years, joined the National Honor Society in eleventh grade, and participated in a Bible study group that helped him grow his leadership skills.

Graduation was a meaningful milestone for Curren, not only because he was given the opportunity to speak at the San Diego ceremony, but also because he finally met many of his classmates in person for the first time.

“We bonded over the years through our classes, but getting to meet at prom and grad night was incredible,” he said. “I know we will be friends for years to come.”

In his speech, Curren encouraged his classmates to take on the future with confidence and courage.

“To the class of 2025, we are not just the future, we are the present,” he said. “Let’s get out there and make our mark because we are destined to change the world.”

Curren’s advice to incoming high school students is simple: Keep calm and carry on.

As he looks ahead to college and the release of his book, there is no doubt that Curren is ready to do exactly that and inspire others along the way.
