California Virtual Academies offers students more than a traditional academic experience. Career and Technical Education pathways allow students to explore careers, build practical skills and earn industry-recognized certifications while still in high school.

CTE pathways are designed to help students identify their interests and take steps toward a future that aligns with their goals.

Exploring Careers with Purpose

Students start with an exploration year that introduces different industries and career options. They move into concentration courses and then a capstone experience that focuses on real-world application.

“Career exploration is about giving students the opportunity to say yes, this is for me, or no, this is not,” said CTE Program Coordinator Madonna Johnson. “We are bringing opportunities to students that they may not have been exposed to otherwise.”

Students gain clarity as they progress through the pathway. Some confirm their interests. Others decide to try a different direction.

Pathways That Reflect Real Opportunities

CAVA offers several pathways that align with in-demand industries:

  • Business and Finance – Students study entrepreneurship, financial literacy, business management, business operations and the ins/outs of financial services/management.
  • Engineering and Architecture – Students explore engineering technology, CAD design, robotics, automation, and real-world problem solving.
  • Public Services – Students examine careers in law, public safety, and government.

Coursework connects directly to real-world applications and shows students how these skills translate into careers.

Earning Certifications While in High School

Each pathway includes certifications that students can earn before graduation. These credentials show employers that students have completed industry-aligned training.

Students may earn certifications such as:

  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant
  • CPR and First Aid
  • Networking
  • Python Programming
  • Cisco Cybersecurity
  • A large variety of Adobe certifications.
  • Other industry-recognized certifications

“We have students who can complete their certification and go straight into the workforce,” Johnson said.

CAVA covers the cost of certification exams and offers them virtually. More students can participate because location and transportation are not barriers.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Students connect with professionals and industries throughout the year. Monthly guest speakers represent different career sectors. Students attend virtual college and career fairs, trade events and military pathway sessions.

Job Quest sessions introduce students to employers hiring and explain the requirements of those roles. These experiences give students insight into careers that may not be accessible through traditional part-time work.

Building Confidence and Direction

Students build confidence as they move through their pathway. Some begin without a clear plan. Many finish with a stronger sense of direction and purpose.

Students who complete a full pathway earn recognition at graduation. Industry-specific honor cords represent their achievement and commitment.

A Pathway to What Comes Next

CTE pathways help students move forward with real skills and experience. Students leave with certifications, industry exposure and a clearer understanding of their options.

CAVA provides the structure and support for students to take that next step.
